On Sunday, November 24, traffic officers in Eerste River apprehended four suspects involved in a spree of robberies. The suspects, spotted in a white vehicle, were caught after one was seen robbing a woman of her cellphone. Three men and one woman were arrested, found with three cellphones, a wallet, and cash linked to other robberies. The male suspects are in custody at Kleinvlei police station, while the woman was transferred to Mfuleni SAPS. They face charges of robbery and possession of stolen goods.
JP Smith, mayoral committee member for Safety and Security, commended the officers for their situational awareness and reminded the public to be vigilant during the festive season.
Drunk Driving Arrests Over the past week, 105 individuals were arrested for drunk driving, a significant increase from the previous weeks 27 arrests. Smith urged the public not to drink and drive to avoid accidents and legal consequences.
Emergency Calls The Citys Public Emergency Communication Centre PECC recorded 1,823 incidents over the weekend, including 119 cases of assault, 424 medical emergencies, 231 noise complaints, 87 domestic violence cases, and 60 vehicle or pedestrian accidents. The spike in domestic violence cases from 48 to 87 was particularly concerning.
Drug Busts and By-Law Enforcement Metro Police arrested 93 suspects this past week and seized significant amounts of drugs, including 105 bundles of khat and 25 packets of Tik. Law enforcement officers made 138 arrests and issued 6,805 notices for various by-law infringements. In one incident on Friday, November 22, officers stopped a vehicle in Plantation Road, Wetton, and arrested the occupants for possession of railway overhead cables.
