drones are changing the face of warfare expert

From surveillance and reconnaissance to suicide strikes and propaganda, drones have changed the face of war, and this is clearly illustrated in conflicts in Ukraine -Russia , Gaza and parts of Africa.

In Ukraine in particular, they had now become the signature weapon of the war.

Speaking during a conference at the Africa Aerospace, Defence (AAD) Exhibition at Waterkloof Air Force Base near Pretoria, Professor Lindy Heinecken from Stellenbosch University says the widespread use and development of drones had led to a phenomenal change the nature of warfare.

Whereas previously drones were operated by states , but as they become more affordable and widely available, they are no longer controlled by the state and can become a threat to national security.

Heinecken drew attention to both the positive and negative uses of the unmanned aircraft, using the example of Ukraine where drones had targeted energy infrastructure, with the aim to cripple the economy and wear down the will of the people.
