Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie says the R800 000 expenditure for his trip to the Olympics in Paris, France is within the bounds of the Ministerial Handbook.

There have been complaints about exorbitant amounts spent on the trip.

McKenzie says his job is to go to sporting events and his attendance cannot be compared to Superfan, Mama Joy.

He says, You know I was in the news for spending money, going to Paris. The past two days, I had to answer being called a 'joy ride' I first got very angry because they were comparing to, 'they said I removed Mama Joy and I replaced myself with her. I got angry, then I realised being a government official, you must be transparent. You've taken on something that you cant be angry when people ask you about their money because every cent that you are using is belonging to the people.

McKenzie says he attended six meetings ahead of the Olympics.
