Djibouti's Mahmoud Ali Youssouf Elected New Au Commission Chairperson

Djiboutis Foreign Affairs Minister Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has been elected as the new African Union Commission chairperson in Addis Ababa.

He has defeated other contenders like former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga and former Minister of Foreign Affairs in Madagascar Richard Randriamandrato.

The seasoned diplomat has vowed to drive transformation and ensure that Africa is placed on the African agenda.

He is going to succeed Chadian former Prime Minister Moussa Faki Mahamat who is stepping down.

After a ferocious battle with contenders, that once again showed sharp divisions in the African continent, Youssouf is going to face a number of challenges as the continent is battling with conflict in the Eastern DRC, civil war in Sudan, terrorism in the Sahel region, economic integration and climate change.
