Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube says while she is appalled by some of the incidents that have affected the start of the Grade 12 examinations , the exams overall are progressing according to plan.
The Minister was briefing the media in Cape Town in terms of the National Senior Certificate examinations, among other issues.
Some of the incidents include cheating, food poisoning among matriculants, incidents of rape and inclement weather .
The Minister cited the taxi strikes in the Northern Cape and protests in Limpopo as just some of the challenges the class of 2024 had to contend with during the first part of the final school exam.
"In KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Limpopo and Mpumalanga, we face disruptions that were caused by inclement weather. The Department had activated contingency plans and learners were able to write and complete their papers. We also experienced some power outages in some areas and backup generators were relied on for learners to complete their papers."
