De Lille Highlights Progress In Reviving Durbans Tourism

Tourism Minister Patricia De Lille announced that efforts by a Presidential task team to bring tourists back to Durban this festive season are showing positive results. The task team was formed in February to address a decline in tourism due to the 2021 civil unrest and water quality issues at Durban beaches caused by high e-coli levels from sewage spills.

De Lille mentioned that the eThekwini municipality expects 1.3 million visitors during the festive period. She credited the hard work of the private sector and tourism establishments in preparing Durban and the province for this season. The South African Police Service and Metro Police have safety plans in place, and hotel bookings are surging. De Lille urged visitors to enjoy responsibly and assured them of the safety and improved water quality at Durban beaches.
