The Democratic Alliance (DA) has threatened to approach the courts once President Cyril Ramaphosa signs into law the Basic Education Laws Amendment (BELA) Bill.

This was confirmed by party leader and Minister of Agriculture John Steenhuisen during his address at the Cape Town Press Club. Ramaphosa is set to sign the Bill into law on Friday.

Steenhuisen was presenting his partys approach to the Government of National Unity (GNU), the reasons it joined the GNU and its policy priorities.

He says despite being part of the GNU, the DA is against the signing of the BELA Bill into law, as well as the National Health Insurance (NHI).

Steenhuisen says the BELA Bill compromises the rights of children to mother-tongue education.
