da reaffirms commitment to gnu despite vat hike fallout

Democratic Alliance DA leader John Steenhuisen says his party remains committed to the Government of National Unity GNU after a fallout over the African National Congress ANC decision to support the VAT tax increase proposed by the Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana in his budget.

The GNU was formed nine months ago after the 2024 elections where the ANC slipped below the 50 support mark.

The DA voted against the 2025 national budget and has launched a legal challenge against the implementation of the VAT hike.

Steenhuisen says there is still time to focus on genuine power sharing within the GNU.

The DA went into government because we want to help grow the economy and create jobs. If we dont get our economy moving, we will not create jobs. The DA also entered government to be part of government. And not to be a mere spectator. We need to be in the wheelhouse of government, where we can determine the economic direction of the country. Its not attainable or sustainable to a party of government that cuts you out of key decision areas and so we are seeking ways in which we can ensure that there is a balance within the GNU.
