cruise protests disrupt itineraries

The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) has warned its member cruise lines that they may have to skip calls at popular European ports due to anti-cruise protests.

The warning follows a series of protests against overtourism, some particularly against the cruise industry, in top European destinations such as Barcelona, Venice and most recently Brittany in France.

Activist groups blocked the Seven Seas Voyager from disembarking passengers at a port in Finistre, Brittany, reports travelmole.com . The Voyager's 700 guests were greeted by activists wielding signs saying We are the iceberg.

Last year, at a port in Douarnenez, Brittany, activists jeered at the 100 guests aboard Atlas Ocean Voyages' World Traveller , shouting:You are not welcome and Shame on you.

There will be some consideration of adapting the itineraries if we feel that all passengers will not be well-treated, said Marie-Caroline Laurent , European Director of the CLIA.
