The Mpumalanga High Court in Mbombela has overturned the expulsion of Mary Phadi, the provincial convener of the uMkhonto weSizwe Party. Phadi was expelled from the party after being accused of misappropriating party funds.
The party had claimed that Phadi failed to respond to allegations of misappropriation and was asked to voluntarily resign. When she refused, the MK Party's national leadership terminated her membership.
Phadi led the party in this year's general elections, helping it become the official opposition in Mpumalanga.
The court ruling in Phadi's favor sparked celebrations among her supporters, who turned out in large numbers to show their backing for what they believe is their rightful leader. Phadi, who was appointed as provincial convener six months ago, stated that the proper procedures were not followed in her expulsion.
