Court Grants Order For Enyobeni Tavern To Be Demolished

The East London High Court, in the Eastern Cape, has granted an order for the Buffalo City Metro to demolish the Enyobeni Tavern in Scenery Park within 31 days.

The Metro made an application for the demolition citing challenges of zoning, the condition of the structure and its business license.

In June 2022, 21 young people lost their lives at the establishment.

Metro spokesperson Samkelo Ngwenya says they welcome the courts decision.

We are aware the law allows for various rights to appeal however, we are hopeful that will not be the case and that order will be adhered to by the owners in the stipulated period, which is 31 one days. The Metro is pursuing several issues related to Enyobeni and its owners and these are against the structure. We are also assisting with the ongoing police investigation.
