Counterfeit Alcohol Seized In Dunoon

On Friday morning, Cape Town law enforcement uncovered a large stash of suspected counterfeit alcohol in Dunoon following a tip-off about an illegal operation. The operation was concealed in plain sight, hidden within an abandoned building in the area. According to community leader Sinethemba Matomela, the fake alcohol had been causing serious health issues among local drinkers, with some experiencing prolonged intoxication, severe headaches, and chest pains. However, no official reports have confirmed that individuals sought medical treatment for these symptoms.

Matomela expressed gratitude to the City of Cape Town for uncovering the operation, which was allegedly hidden in plain view. During the raid, authorities found bottles resembling well-known whiskey and gin brands, along with empty containers and 25 liters of unidentified chemicals. It is suspected that legitimate alcohol was being diluted and repackaged to mimic popular branded drinks.

Many local residents were unaware of the dangers posed by the counterfeit alcohol, as the illicit products were being sold at unusually low prices. While some locals admitted to continuing to purchase the alcohol despite its low cost, they were unaware of the potential health risks involved. "We, as community leaders, were unaware of this operation, but after the raid, residents started coming forward," said Matomela.

Although no fatalities have been reported, Matomela noted that regular consumers of the counterfeit alcohol often experienced severe symptoms like prolonged intoxication or intense headaches. Some of the counterfeit liquor was reportedly sold in local taverns, where patrons were unable to differentiate it from genuine alcohol products.

This incident highlights the growing concern over the circulation of counterfeit alcohol, which poses significant health risks to unsuspecting consumers. The operation in Dunoon has prompted increased awareness in the community about the dangers of purchasing alcohol from unreliable sources, and authorities are now focused on preventing similar illegal operations from taking place in the future.
