councillor calls for investigation into alleged drug trade in phoenix

IFP councillor in eThekwini Dr. Jonathan Annipen has called for the deployment of a special task team to investigate the alleged drug trade in Phoenix, North of Durban.

This follows several drive-by shootings that have taken place in the area, allegedly due to drug turf wars. Last week two men were shot in a drive-by in Longcroft.

Earlier a couple was gunned down in their driveway in Clayfield while four men were shot and killed in Westham. Residents remain concerned that the drug trade is making the area unsafe.

Annipen says an independent body could provide more transparency in probing the drug problem in Phoenix.

The community is right in what they are saying about police and law enforcement agencies in being aware of who the perpetrators and culprits are. I think what is now needful is for the provincial government and the national government to set in a task team to ensure that an independent investigation is undertaken in the Phoenix area. I think leaving it to the powers that be in a local area has failed us and I think an independent body should be set up, he adds.
