Government departments and entities have incurred irregular expenditure of more than R50 billion over the last five years. Fruitless and wasteful expenditure was more than R1.4 billion during the same period.
This is according to the office of the Auditor-General AG.
The AG briefed Parliaments Standing Committee on Appropriations on the perennial offending departments in respect of irregular, wasteful and fruitless expenditure over the past five financial years.
The AGs office says there is a culture of a lack accountability in government departments and entities, that leads to the vast amounts of fruitless and wasteful expenditure.
The main culprit when it comes to fruitless and wasteful expenditure, is the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment, clocking more than R290 million.
