Free State Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs CoGTA MEC Saki Mokoena announced that the Local Government Summit will develop an action plan aimed at helping municipalities achieve clean audits, improve revenue collection, and enhance billing systems. The summit, which took place in Bloemfontein, brought together representatives from all municipalities, the South African Local Government Association SALGA, Water Boards, and Eskom to assess governance, performance, and service delivery in local government.
For years, many municipalities have struggled to achieve clean audits. Mokoena addressed key issues hindering progress "We are tackling the issues of revenue generation and billing systems because they are interconnected. Municipalities are struggling to properly bill both residents and industries, which impacts their ability to generate revenue and recover the costs of the services they provide."
He also highlighted the importance of effectively implementing government grants "The third issue were addressing is the proper implementation of grants, ensuring accountability and measurable results. Our goal is to build on major infrastructure networks and improve service delivery across the board."
