The City of Cape Town's Mayoral Committee has endorsed a proposed Memorandum of Agreement MoA with Shark Spotters, a non-profit organisation, to support the implementation of the Cape Peninsula Baboon Strategic Management Plan BSMP, Cape town Etc reports.
The decision, made on 19 November 2024, paves the way for Council to consider the agreement in December.
If approved, the MoA will enable the City's Spatial Planning and Environment Directorate to partner with Shark Spotters, leveraging their expertise and resources to manage the complex interactions between humans and baboons in the region.
The Cape Peninsula Baboon Management Joint Task Team CPBMJTT - a collaboration between SANParks, CapeNature and the City -identified Shark Spotters as the ideal partner for this initiative. The BSMP aims to maintain a sustainable wild baboon population within natural habitats while mitigating human-baboon conflicts through community-driven solutions.
Funding and implementationUnder the proposed agreement, the City plans to contribute R33 million over three years, including R9 million in the current financial year and R12 million annually in 2025/26 and 2026/27. These funds will support key initiatives such as
