The public input process for the redevelopment of the old Woodstock Hospital site into affordable housing in Cape Town has been extended to the end of January 2025. This decision follows a meeting where residents expressed mixed feelings some feared current occupiers would become homeless, while others welcomed the potential boost in property values.
Nearly 900 people have been living in the hospital, renamed Cissie Gool House, since 2017 after being displaced by gentrification. The city sees the site as a major opportunity for social and affordable housing, valued at approximately R87 million with a potential for about 500 housing units.
Residents voiced concerns about displacement, with many occupiers wanting to pay for utilities and contribute to the community. Some residents support the sale and development, believing it will enhance property values.
Reclaim the City urged the development to be incremental to avoid displacing current occupiers. The City plans further engagement to find appropriate solutions for each household. Carl Pophaim, a city official, emphasized the importance of hearing all voices in the affordable housing agenda.
