Save the Children South Africa has called on civil society organisations in the Eastern Cape to assist children in the rural areas affected by acute poverty.
This comes as some rural areas in the province face a high unemployment rate and food insecurity.
While the non-profit organisation acknowledges the existence of nutrition assistance programmes in some areas, it says they are only there for the short term.
It maintains that it's time the land in rural communities is used to teach residents how to produce their own food.
The organisations Health and Nutrition Thematic Lead, Marumo Sekgobela reflected on the University of Cape Towns (UCT) latest data on child poverty.
