The Gauteng provincial government, in partnership with the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality and civil movement Jozi My Jozi, have established a City Clean Up Activity called CBD Friday.
The programme will focus on ensuring safety of residents and businesses on the streets of Hillbrow.
Gauteng Provincial Spokesperson, Vuyo Mhaga, says, "It is gonna expand about 10 CDBs that have been identified Kempton Park, Germiston, CBD in Pretoria, the Vaal, Hammanskraal. So, they are about 10 of them, but we want to first perfect the setup in Johannesburg. So, we are going to concentrate a bit in Johannesburg and I think we will then roll it out on the other areas.
The Department of Infrastructure Development and Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs believes that this initiative could help in creating jobs and growing the economy of Gauteng.
The departments spokesperson, Theo Nkonki says, First and foremost, it is to make people who are in our CBDs feel safer. Thats why we are doing CCTV cameras, because once people are doing business again in the CBDs, we believe that we can create jobs and we can attract other companies that have left the CBD. So, the investment comes back to the CBD.
