Cape Town Tables Inclusive Social Package For Indigents

The City of Cape Town has positioned itself as a leader among South African metros by introducing the most comprehensive social assistance package aimed at providing indigent relief and rates rebates, Cape town Etc reports.

This initiative comes as part of the 2025/26 draft budgets, which align with insights from Statistics South Africa's recent non-financial census of municipalities.

Released on 27 March 2025, the census revealed that Cape Town boasts the highest number of residents benefitting from free basic services.

Under the banner of the new Invested in Hope budget, Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis underscored the citys commitment to uplifting lower-income households and pensioners.

This budget signifies another major step towards our vision of building a city of hope for all, Hill-Lewis stated, highlighting plans that include the countrys largest ever pro-poor infrastructure budget of R39.7 billion over the next three years.
