Cape Town Set To Unleash Super Police Force

The City of Cape Town is advancing plans to unify its traffic services, law enforcement, and Metro Police into a single, consolidated force.
This initiative aims to enhance public safety and operational efficiency. The project is set to commence in October 2025 and is expected to be fully implemented over the next four years, as first reported by Top Auto .
According to Alderman JP Smith, Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, over 1 000 officers are undergoing training to acquire the necessary qualifications for the integrated roles. Smith emphasised that the amalgamation is designed to optimize resources without incurring significant additional costs, ultimately benefiting the public through improved service delivery.
However, the plan has encountered resistance from some members of the South African Municipal Workers Union SAMWU. Concerns have been raised about the potential loss of specialised roles and the lack of comprehensive consultation with affected personnel. SAMWU representatives argue that the restructuring could dilute the passion and expertise of officers who joined the service with specific career paths in mind.
Despite the pushback, the city maintains that the integration will lead to faster response times and more effective law enforcement.
