Cape Towns holiday season officially began on Sunday, 1 December, as Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis ignited the iconic Christmas lights, marking the start of a much-anticipated tradition, Cape town Etc reports.

This year's event, held at the Grand Parade, drew an impressive crowd of around 80 000 spectators, all eager to witness the spectacular light display.

Now in its 55th year, the annual switch-on has become a beloved occasion for families and residents, uniting Capetonians from all walks of life. Hill-Lewis highlighted the theme for this year, 'Cape Town People of Hope,' calling it a reflection of the resilience and generosity that defines the citys citizens.

'I see hope in the people of Cape Town every day,' said Hill-Lewis. 'They are kind, generous, and help each other through difficult times. Our City may still have challenges, but we are moving in the right direction. That, to me, is hope.'

The mayor also reminisced about his childhood, recalling how he once attended the event as a young boy. 'This tradition brings families together, and it's a joy to see it continue year after year,' he added.
