A Cape Town police officer arrested for allegedly kidnapping and extorting Thai nationals has been sacked, Cape {town} Etc reports.

Constable Aphiwe Mondi was arrested in December 2022, together with Sivuyile Lollo Mki, a kidnapping ring leader according to provincial police and Xolani Jiyosi.

This occurred after two Thai nationals were kidnapped in Mowbray while leaving work on 22 December 2022. The kidnappers demanded R800 000 for their release. Their families spent R30 000.

Four days later, one of the captives bodies were discovered in Khayelitshas informal settlement of Endlovini. The final hostage was liberated two days later. Mondi, Mki and Jiyosi were detained that same evening.

Captain Frederick van Wyk, a provincial police spokeswoman, confirmed Mondis dismissal on Sunday, according to TimesLive .
