The City of Cape Town has started building a 7-megawatt solar plant in Atlantis, as part of its efforts to secure a more stable energy supply.

Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis highlights the project as one of the citys key initiatives to reduce dependence on Eskom, especially in light of the ongoing electricity price increases.

We will also include five megawatts of battery storage, says Hill-Lewis, adding that Cape Town is determined to make sure load-shedding never comes back, and this new plant will help. Importantly, this power will also be cheaper than Eskoms power, which is becoming more critical for residents given Eskoms massive price hike.

Hill-Lewis also notes that the plant is expected to provide economic benefits and create jobs in Atlantis and beyond.

Our plan is to roll more of these plants out over time and also to buy independent power on the open market, he adds.
