The South African Policing Union (SAPU) in the Northern Cape has called for the immediate arrest of a senior police officer in the province accused of raping a minor.
The official allegedly raped the 15-year-old teenager girl in August. The Independent Police Investigation Directorate (IPID) says they are investigating the matter.
SAPU says the 49-year-old official is still at work.
SAPU provincial secretary, Sabata Tshabedi elaborates, As SAPU we wanted the employer, SAPS itself to do what is right, to ensure that they follow the processes that they would normally follow if any junior ranking member is being implicated in such incidents. We have seen how the employer is dragging its feet in ensuring those processes are implemented with immediate effect. The alleged perpetrator is still outside, not arrested, not suspended, we question the consistency of the SAPS.
