Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube says major budget cuts in her department are affecting the efficiency of the education system.
She says the department has the huge task of ensuring that each class has a balanced teacher and learner ratio.
Gwarube is in Bloemfontein in the Free State as part her national listening and learning tour to the different provinces.
Gwarube says overcrowding and infrastructure in schools will affect education outcomes.
We are seeing infrastructure is a very common theme. I am going to be going around the province today, I know that they are not specifically one of the provinces affected by issues of pit toilets in the backlog that we need to deal with but infrastructure is a huge problem whether its maintenance of infrastructure or whether it is appropriate sanitation or building new schools. We know it is a huge achilleas heel for us.
