Bayer Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso has confirmed that Victor Boniface is facing a spell on the sidelines with a minor thigh injury sustained during Nigeria's Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Rwanda. Boniface, who was replaced by Umar Sadiq in the 89th minute of the 2-1 defeat, is expected to miss several upcoming matches.
Alonso, however, played down suggestions that Boniface would be ruled out for six to eight weeks, expressing hope that the 23-year-old striker could return before the end of the year. Despite the injury, Boniface has been a key figure for Leverkusen this season, contributing six goals and one assist in 10 Bundesliga games.
