South Africa intends to introduce major improvements and technological upgrades to its ID cards and passports . The Department of Home Affairs intends to introduce the upgrades as a safety measure, intended to make the documents more difficult to replicate.

Minister of Home Affairs Leon Schreiber confirmed that the department has begun contemplating the use of biometric technology to modernise the issuance process of identification documents in the country.

The introduction of such technology will curb vulnerabilities associated with human discretion.

The contemplated upgrades will include the integration of facial recognition and fingerprint authentication as far as identification processes are concerned.

The ultimate aim of these introductions is to prevent the manipulation of documents during the application process.
