South African sprinter, Bayanda Walaza, has confirmed his status as the fastest teenager in the world.

The 18-year-old Grade 12 pupil from Pretoria won the 10- metre gold medal at the World Athletics Under-20 Championships in Lima, Peru.

Walaza, who was a member of the 4X100-metre relay team that won silver at the Paris Olympic Games, clocked 10,19 seconds in the final earlier this morning, finishing three one-hundredths of a second ahead of Puripol Boonson of Thailand.

Walazas countryman and Olympic Games relay teammate, Bradley Nkoana, won bronze in 10,26 seconds.

Team South Africa has now won three medals at the Championships.
