Balancing Conservation And Community: Gamewatchers Model

Gamewatchers Safaris MD Mohanjeet Brar explains how the companys model integrates sustainable tourism with conservation efforts and community benefits in a video by wildlife filmmaker Mark Rowe .

The Gamewatchers community conservancy model is built on three key pillars:

1. Environment Protecting and restoring ecosystems like the Mara by reversing wildlife population decline, conserving biodiversity and securing habitats.
2. Community Ensuring Maasai landowners benefit from conservation efforts by leasing their land for wildlife protection, aligning economic incentives with sustainability.
3. Tourism Moving away from high-density safari tourism towards a low-impact model that enhances visitor experiences while benefitting Kenyas tourism industry.

Since launching the Selenkay Conservancy in 1997, Gamewatchers has expanded its community-owned wildlife conservancies to include Ol Kinyei, Orok, Motorogi, Naboisho and, most recently, Mara Ripoi in 2023. These initiatives secure critical wildlife corridors while providing direct financial benefits to local communities.
