Australian Teen Sam Konstas Ready For Indias Pace Attack In Boxing Day Test
Teenage opener Sam Konstas is determined to take on India's formidable pace attack in the Boxing Day Test after receiving his first call-up to Australia's squad. At just 19 years old, Konstas is set to open alongside veteran Usman Khawaja, who is 38, in the highly anticipated match at a sold-out MCG. His inclusion follows the axing of Nathan McSweeney, who played only three Tests.
Im very excited, Konstas told Fox Sports after being dismissed for a duck in his Big Bash League match for the Sydney Thunder on Saturday. I want to be challenged, and Ive got a few plans against Indias bowlers. I feel like Im moving really nicely, so hopefully, I get that opportunity.
Australias top order has struggled against Indias pace spearhead, Jasprit Bumrah, throughout the first three Tests of the ongoing five-match series, which is currently tied at 1-1. While McSweeney was dropped, Khawaja is also under pressure due to a lean run of form.
Konstas' place in the starting lineup isnt guaranteed, with Josh Inglis and all-rounder Beau Webster also included in the squad. If he does play, Konstas will become Australia's youngest Test debutant since Pat Cummins made his debut against South Africa in Johannesburg in 2011.
Konstas has impressed with his recent form, including becoming the youngest player since Ricky Ponting to score two centuries in the same Sheffield Shield match. He also hit a century while playing for the Prime Ministers XI against India.
Konstas received the call-up while batting in the nets last week. I was so thrilled and called my parents straight away, and they were very emotional, he said. Mum was in tears, so I was trying not to cry. Dad was super proud. Its been an amazing journey with all the ups and downs.
