Anc To Honour Former Leader Tambo Today

Today marks the 107th birthday of the late former African National Congress ANC president Oliver Tambo. He was the partys leader from 1967 to 1991.

The longest-serving ANC president died from a stroke in 1993, shortly after witnessing the death of South African Communist Party SACP general-secretary Chris Hani. The ANC will pay tribute to Tambo at its National Executive Committee meeting in Benoni in eastern Johannesburg.

The partys national spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri explains what activities will take place to mark the day.

So the ANC will go and lay wreaths at his grave site here in Boksburg and further to that, there will be conversations at the level of the NEC. In fact, that has started happening, about the injunction given to the successive generations about what to look out for into the future and theres a lot of reflection about the ANC of Oliver Tambo and the ANC of today and what it is that we must do to renew the ANC.
