The president of the National African Federated Chamber of Commerce and Industry NAFCOC , Gilbert Mosena says it's about time that Africa becomes innovative and does not rely on products from other countries.

He was responding to US President Donald Trumps tariff announcement and its impact on business.

Mosena was speaking on the sidelines of NAFCOCs 60th anniversary celebrations in Durban.

"It was not our wish as a country, as a business that we cut the relationship but if they have decided to put America first there is no reason why Africa should also not say the same thing. We put Africa first. What it means is that it's an opportunity, this creates an opportunity for us as African people, to start thinking of doing things ourselves. We can no longer continue to be consumers of the goods and services that come from outside. We must make them ourselves, the market is with us. We have got three billion in Africa, so we should be able to service our market. Our children are engineers, our children are all different professionals. If given a chance they will be creative, innovative and produce."
