The Johannesburg-based Ichikowitz Family Foundation survey has found that around 74% of the 1000 youth surveyed in South Africa believe the country is headed in the wrong direction.

The foundation conducted the African Youth Survey 2024 among youngsters from all walks of life across 16 countries on the continent.

The study found that only 16% of South African youth surveyed are optimistic about the future.

The foundations trustee Reuben Ichikowitz says, "So this is as a result of a pan African survey that we conducted where we interviewed over 5 500 youth, aged between 18 and 24 around the continent and all of these interviews are face to face, and these results are the SA results compared to the continental survey."

"We find issues such as corruption and access to jobs that are driving a negative sentiment in SA," Ichikowitz adds.
