13 000 suspects arrested for various crimes during operation shanela

Police have arrested over 13 000 suspects during Operation Shanela over the last week. Crimes for which they were arrested include crimes such as murder, rape, possession of illegal firearms and business robberies.

Some of the major highlights of the operation include the arrest of a Nigerian drug mule at the OR Tambo International Airport for possession of cocaine and 85 illegal miners.

National Police Spokesperson, Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, says, We also arrested 185 drug dealers throughout the country. 462 were arrested for drunk and driving. 2001 suspects were arrested for being in possession of drugs; the majority of them, being 1 257, were arrested in the Western Cape. 151 firearms were confiscated during operations; 30 of these were confiscated in Eastern Cape; (In) KZN (we) confiscated 29 and (in the) Western Cape, (we) confiscated 22. 81 hijacked and stolen vehicles were also recovered during this weeks operations, says Mathe.
